Aunt Bee

Aunt Bee was a character on the long-running 1960s American television sitcom The Andy Griffith Show and its successor program, Mayberry R.F.D. Aunt Bee was played by actress Frances Bavier.

Beatrice Taylor (called "Aunt Bee" by everyone) was the aunt of Sheriff Andy Taylor in the small town of Mayberry, North Carolina. Aunt Bee appeared in the first episode of The Andy Griffith Show, when she moved in with Andy after his housekeeper Rose left to get married. She helped as housekeeper for the widowed Taylor and his young son, Opie, and served as a surrogate mother/grandmother figure to Opie as well. Aunt Bee, Andy, Opie, and Andy's cousin and deputy sheriff Barney Fife made up the core cast of the show.

Despite having never been married, nor having any children of her own, Bee was a natural maternal figure. She was constantly doting over Andy and Opie, and would take any opportunity to prepare somebody food. She was an excellent cook, and often prepared meals for the inmates in Mayberry's tiny jail as well. Although a fine cook, Bee was oblivious to the fact that she made terrible pickles; Andy and Barney referred to them as her "Kerosene Cucumbers." However, she was probably best known for her apple pie.

Aunt Bee would stay with them to see Opie grow from a small boy to a teenager, until Andy finally left to marry his longtime girlfriend, Helen Crump. After the Taylors left Mayberry and the program was transformed into Mayberry R.F.D., she continued to fill largely the same role for the new character Sam Jones (also a widowed father) and his son (but as he was not sheriff, she was no longer usually involved in preparing meals for the jail inmates).

Aunt Bee was one of the few characters who lasted from the show's beginning through its transformation into Mayberry R.F.D.

Aunt Bee died sometime between Bavier's departure from Mayberry R.F.D. and the television movie Return to Mayberry. Even though Frances Bavier was still alive when the movie was made, she was one of the few original cast members not to be involved in the reunion. Bavier had retired in 1970, after leaving Mayberry R.F.D. Her absence was explained by having a scene in which Andy visited the cemetery where Aunt Bee was buried.
